Nailing the HireVue:
The HireVue and the Placement Test.
So, you finally submitted your application. Congratulations! Now it is time to take a HireVue or a placement test or both!
What is a HireVue:
It is brutal. You sit in front of your computer and answer ~3 premade interview questions (mostly behavioral, sometimes there will be a brain teaser)
There is no REAL interviewer. Many firms leave HireVues to be screened by software, some just leave it up to HR, and very few firms will have actual bankers review HireVues
The whole process is typically completed in ~30-45 minutes. Sometimes they can be completed quicker. There is usually 1-3 minutes to answer a question
Reasons a HireVue is administered:
Weed out candidates who are lazy / socially inept / overthinkers
Learn something about the candidate outside of their resume
How to ace a HireVue:
Dress the part. Professional attire (for the lads, this means a suit. For the gals, I apologize, I am unfamiliar with the technicalities, but a suit equivalent)
Take it within 1 week of receiving it and take it in 1 try. Yes, 1 try. Most HireVues provide you with the option to re-take an answer (they say they can’t see if you choose this option). Maybe I’m a conspiracy theorist, but I NEVER moved on in a process when I re-took any of my responses during a HireVue (If you fuck it up really badly, you should probably re-take)
Be clear, concise, and confident. A HireVue is not administered to see who has the most perfectly recited responses, instead, they are used to judge a person’s character
Look at the camera when you speak. I’m sure you’re beautiful, but don’t look at yourself when you speak, look directly into your laptop’s camera. If you’re able, crack a smile every now and then, but don’t make it weird
For placement tests, just do your best and don’t overthink your responses. I hate these tests because you never actually know how you do or what the score is used for. Super difficult to truly judge a person’s character without ever hearing them speak IMO
