FT 2027 Recruiting Kicked OFF

FT 2027 kicked off for banking and buyside programs. This process is much different from summer analyst programs. Only the largest firms execute standardized recruiting processes, most recruit ‘ad-hoc.’
Ad-hoc recruiting means that only a few spots are open across select groups vs. hiring of entire analyst classes. Most firms recruit ad-hoc for full-time roles because they’re largely able to fill their classes from the SA programs. So, if there are 2,000 spots for summer analyst recruiting, there is only ~200 for FT recruiting.
This makes it 10x more important to Apply Early & Often to ensure that you’re getting your app to the top of the pile.
Our Premium Database covers 500+ firms across banking, buyside, and consulting so that you never miss an app. (ThePulsePrep—Stripe.com)

Market Update:
Total Market Factor Index
Periodically, we will feature a ‘Total Market Factor Index’ covering the key indicators and positioning of the market—focused on the U.S.
I want to flip the idea of a K-shaped economy on its head and say it’s actually a consumer vs. corporates economy. The consumer seems to be deteriorating, but the screens tell us that everything is going great. Unfortunately, consumer health is usually an indicator of future corporate performance, not the other way around. With Warsh looking like a lock, a few rate cuts could turn this ship around.

Learning Point of the Week:
Navigating FT Banking & Buyside Recruiting
There are two types of people who recruit for FT: i). the sweats who are looking to trade shops / go directly to the buyside from undergrad and ii). the underprepared or late-bloomers who did not lock in during SA recruiting.
You don’t see anyone who is just dipping their foot in the water. Therefore, the interview pool is very divergent. To win in FT recruiting, you need to be a sweat or at least look like one.
The process is quick and much less structured than the SA process. In FT recruiting, firms typically recruit ad-hoc or as-needed to backfill shitty interns who are not going to receive return offers or add headcount to growing teams. There are three identifiable waves to FT recruiting:
The pre-recruit. The sweatiest firms (Warburg Pincus, Qatalyst, Insight Partners, etc) will all open apps over a year in advance and recruit FT analysts before even starting the summer analyst programs. For example, Warburg is recruiting juniors today to become FT analysts in 2027…these students have not even begun their 2026 internships. You have no shot at getting these looks if you don’t have a solid SA gig lined up already
The mid-cycle. Mid-year reviews are a 90% indicator of whether or not you’ll receive a return offer. Some interns don’t perform or are not a strong cultural fit, so within 4-5 weeks of the summer internship program, you’ll see a bunch of FT job openings as firms quantify how many spots they need to backfill
The final push. After the internship concludes, there will be a final flood of FT apps for firms looking to add headcount to growing teams. These typically take place once the internship concludes so that firms can size the number of intern accepting their return offers.
Next week, we will dive into why you should either pursue banking or the buyside based on who you are.
